Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon on Wednesday called for the active involvement of the younger generation in tackling escalating global environmental and climate crises.
The information minister made this call while speaking as the chief guest at the opening ceremony of the two-day “Green Energy Olympiad 2026,” held at the CIRDAP Auditorium in the capital.
The minister said the environmental crisis is a global challenge that is often difficult to fully grasp until one is directly affected.
He further noted that environmental crises differ from short-term development issues, as their impacts are long-lasting and far-reaching. In this context, public awareness, behavioural changes and passing that consciousness down through generations is now essential.
The minister stressed the importance of equipping the youth with practical knowledge to ensure sustainable lifestyles, responsible urbanization, and development that remains in harmony with nature.
Highlighting that the global energy crisis and the international political climate are directly impacting both the environment and the economy, Swapon called for the integration of education and research with environmental, political, and economic strategies to foster practical and applicable knowledge.
