The Bangladesh Working Group on Ecology and Development on Monday sent an appeal to the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, requesting the reclassification of liquefied natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas bottling plants as red category installments.

‘Under the Environment Conservation Rules 2023, LNG and LPG plants have been reclassified into the green and orange categories, which is extremely dangerous. This reclassification is having severe consequences on the environment and biodiversity,’ the BWGED said in the appeal.

BWGED further noted that LNG and LPG bottling plants, as well as cylinder manufacturing industries, are located in ecologically eritical areas, negatively affecting the livelihoods of local communities and the surrounding environment.

These materials are highly flammable and prone to explosions, putting local populations at significant risk, the BWGED said.

Additionally, they are causing the destruction of mangrove forests, threatening biodiversity, and destabilising local ecosystems.

Considering the factors, BWGED has demanded the reclassification of these industries into the red category and called on the interim government to impose strict regulations on their operations, the BWGED said in its request sent to the ministry.
