The government plans to recognise households installing rooftop solar systems as 'green houses' and offer them special tax incentives to encourage wider adoption of renewable energy, Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood Tuku has said.
The government will also move to pass a law in parliament soon to facilitate rooftop solar installation and ensure that households can easily access the proposed benefits, he said.
Speaking as the chief guest at a roundtable discussion organised by an English daily at the BISS auditorium in Eskaton, Dhaka, today (31 October), the minister said the government was prioritising renewable energy to address the country's ongoing energy crisis and reduce dependence on imported fuels for electricity generation.
He said the proposed incentives were aimed at encouraging ordinary consumers to install solar panels on their rooftops, making households active contributors to the country's renewable energy transition.
The minister also said the government had set a target of generating 5,000 megawatts of electricity from renewable energy, particularly solar power, within the next six months.
The roundtable, titled "Rooftop Solar at Household Level: Prospects, Challenges and Way Forward", brought together energy experts and industry stakeholders to discuss the potential of rooftop solar, existing barriers to its expansion and measures needed to accelerate adoption.
Bangladesh has been seeking to expand renewable energy generation as rising dependence on imported gas, coal and petroleum products exposes the power sector to international fuel price volatility and supply disruptions.
